Bowel Inflammation

Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract is common among children with autism. Generally, a multi-faceted approach is necessary to address the inflammation.

Dietary interventions, supplementation (as mentioned above for leaky gut), addressing viral issues (See Treating the Immune System), addressing toxicity issues (See Detoxifying), prescription medications, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (See Treating the Brain) are often successful for many children.

Autistic enterocolitis is the term given to describe the condition of ileal-lymphoid nodular hyperplasia found in children with autism (it is only very rarely found in children who do not have autism. This condition is only revealed through colonoscopy. If your medical practitioner finds this condition prescription medications will be offered; however, most parents find, as has been stated before, that a multi-pronged approach must be employed.
