Sound therapies

The field of sound therapy encompasses many different sound-based therapies, such as Auditory Integration Training (AIT), The Tomatis Method, BioAcoustics/Vocal Profiling, The Listening Program and others. Sound-based therapy uses sound vibration to impact the body with special equipment, programs, modified music, and/or specific tones or beats. The origins of sound therapy come from the work of Dr. Alfred Tomatis. The concepts are based on the connection between the voice, the ear, and the brain. Sound moves in waves and its vibration impacts the entire body, which represents many thousands of frequencies. Every cell is a sound resonator and responds to sounds outside of the body.

Vocal Profiling/BioAcoustics explores the potential that the voice is a mathematical representation of the body through vocal analysis. Each person possesses unique harmonics of frequency that can be expressed through the voice. When frequencies of the body become distorted, through illness, pain or emotional stress, a voiceprint will be able to display these distortions as stressed or missing frequencies. Once the necessary frequencies have been identified it has been shown that the introduction of specific frequencies/tones can help the body's system to stabilize and strengthen itself.

Some of the centres in the UK that offer centre-based therapies, led by experienced practitioners, are listed below. Please note that some types of sound therapies can be carried out in the home setting, meaning you do not need to travel and spend time at the centre. On of those therapies is The Listening Program (TLP). TLP providers in the UK can be located via this page - they can advise on the best course of this therapy for each individual child. The therapy itself can then in most cases be carried out at home, and usually entails 2x 15min sessions per day. The cost of the Listening Program is usually, although not always, lower than the cost of other sound therapies, and consists, apart from the cost of consultation, of a set of CDs that has to be purchased or hired out, as well as a pair of approved headphones that cover the required range of frequencies.
